It’s one of the most searched-for tech questions precisely because it’s invisible until you need it — and then it matters a lot, whether you’re setting up a game server, troubleshooting a connection, or wondering how much a website can see about you. What an IP address actually is

IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is a unique numeric label assigned to your device so that data knows where to go. Think of it like a mailing address for your internet connection: when you request a web page, your device attaches its IP so the server knows where to send the reply. Without it, the response would have nowhere to land.

You’ll see IP addresses written in two formats. An IPv4 address looks like 192.168.1.24 — four numbers separated by dots. An IPv6 address is longer, using letters and numbers separated by colons, like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334. More on why both exist in a moment.

Public vs private IP addresses

This is the distinction that trips most people up, so it’s worth getting clear. You actually have two IP addresses at once:

  • Your public IP is the address the outside world sees. It’s assigned by your internet service provider (ISP) and shared by every device on your home network. This is the one our tool shows you and the one websites log.
  • Your private IP is the address your router hands out to each individual device inside your home — your laptop, phone, TV, and so on. These are only visible within your local network. Private addresses usually start with 192.168, 10., or 172.

Your router sits in the middle, translating between the two using a process called NAT (Network Address Translation). That’s why a dozen devices at home can all browse the internet while sharing a single public IP.

IPv4 vs IPv6: why there are two

The original system, IPv4, allows for about 4.3 billion unique addresses. That sounded limitless in the 1980s, but with billions of phones, computers, and smart devices online, the world ran out. IPv6 was created to solve this — it allows for an almost unimaginable number of addresses (340 undecillion), enough for every device for the foreseeable future.

Both run side by side today. Many networks still rely on IPv4, while newer connections increasingly use IPv6. You don’t need to choose; your devices handle it automatically. If our tool shows you a long, colon-separated address, you’re on IPv6.

Static vs dynamic IP addresses

Most home connections use a dynamic IP, meaning your ISP assigns you an address from a pool and it can change periodically — after a router restart, or simply over time. That’s why the number you see today might differ next week.

A static IP stays the same permanently. Businesses often pay for one to host servers, run remote access, or keep services reachable at a fixed address. For everyday browsing, dynamic is fine and slightly better for privacy.

What your IP address reveals — and what it doesn’t

There’s a lot of myth here, so let’s separate fact from fiction. From your public IP, a website or service can reasonably infer:

  • Your approximate location — usually your city or region, based on where your ISP registers the address. This is how sites show local content or the correct language.
  • Your internet provider and whether you’re on home broadband, mobile data, or a corporate/VPN network.

What your IP address does not reveal is just as important: it does not expose your name, your exact street address, your browsing history, or the contents of what you do online. It’s an identifier for a connection, not a window into your personal life. Only your ISP can link an IP to a specific account, and only under legal request.

Why your IP matters for outage checks

Sometimes a website loads fine for most people but blocks your specific address or region — because of a firewall rule, rate-limiting, or geo-restrictions. In that case the site isn’t really "down"; it just isn’t reachable from where you are.

Can someone harm you through your IP?

For everyday users, the risk is low. Your IP alone can’t be used to break into your accounts or read your data. The realistic concerns are minor: someone could roughly estimate your city, or a bad actor could aim network spam at your connection. Using a VPN masks your real public IP behind the VPN provider’s address, which is worth doing on untrusted networks or if you simply prefer more privacy.
