Why social media goes down

Social platforms serve enormous, spiky traffic and roll out changes constantly, which makes them prone to brief, dramatic outages. The failures we see most are botched deployments that break the feed or login for everyone at once, overloaded content-delivery networks that stop images and video from loading, and API errors that leave the app open but unable to fetch anything new. Because these platforms are global, an outage almost always hits everyone at the same time — which is why reports spike so fast.

The most common problems

Most reports fall into a handful of buckets: the feed won’t load or refresh, you can’t log in, posts and messages won’t send, or images and video stay blank. If the app opens but nothing loads, it’s almost certainly a platform-side outage — not your phone. If only you are affected, it’s usually your connection or a cached session.
