Why game servers go down

Online games depend on more moving parts than most websites: authentication, matchmaking, party/voice services, purchase systems, and the game servers themselves — any one of which can fail independently. The failures we see most are scheduled maintenance windows (often overnight in the publisher’s home region), login and authentication overloads right after a big update or launch, matchmaking services that break while the rest of the platform stays up, and occasional DDoS attacks aimed at competitive titles.

The most common gaming problems

Player reports usually cluster around a few issues: can’t connect or "servers unavailable," login failures, matchmaking that never finds a game, failed purchases, and mid-match disconnects. A useful tell: if you can reach the store and menus but not a match, the game servers are up and matchmaking is the culprit. If you can’t get past the login screen at all, it’s an authentication outage — platform-wide and not fixable on your end.

Is it the servers or your connection?

If our monitor shows the platform as up but you keep getting kicked, the problem is likely your own network — a congested connection, a NAT/port issue, or Wi-Fi packet loss.
